”Welcome to the circle of storytellers!
It is a circle that stretches back in time to include the great bards and troubadours and skalds, to include the African griots and Irish shanachies, to include the elders of the native tribes, and to include your own grandmothers and grandfathers.
All that you need to enter that circle is one good story, carried in your head and told by word-of-mouth. That is your passport, your admission certificate, your entrance ticket to the circle. Also the courage to open your mouth and speak your story out loud to a listener.
Joining the circle of storytellers will not necessarily make you rich in material wealth, but it will, as you slowly fill your head with more and more stories, make you feel rich in many other ways. You will find you have stories for many occasions and emergencies in life, from romantic troubles to friendship difficulties to death itself.
And you will also find that you feel different from many people of your generation. You will develop skills as a speaker, as a listener, as a rememberer that set you apart. You will sometimes find that you have become a questioner, not willing to run with the crowd or agree with the group. That is because you may know a story or two that presents an alternative, that asks a question, that imagines a new possibility that people in the group have never thought of.
So it isn’t always easy to be part of this tribe of storytellers. But it is a great thing to do with your life. It is a noble thing to do. Plus, it is a lot of fun (not to mention the beautiful, cool, good-looking people who are in this business!).
So thank you for joining our circle! Thanks for sharing your story-gifts. Thanks especially to those of you who came to this art feeling a bit shy about speaking in public, or who had to fight off moments of forgetting, or moments of stage-fright. The fact that you could carry on shows your true integrity and inner power. I was proud to meet you all, and hope we will meet again at a storytelling crossroads!
